The town of Macerata In 1797 when the General Bonoparte arrived in the town of Macerata, he was struck by its beauty and immediately praised it in his letters to his wife. Situated on the rolling hills between the Apennines and the sea, Macerata has all the splendour of a medieval hill town, with its university dating back to 1290. It has been singled out as one of Italy’s most pleasant cities in terms of quality of services and environment. With only 45,000 inhabitants and full of Renaissance and Baroque architecture, the historical centre is captivating. It is well worth the climb up the 200 steps to the main piazza, where the views from the clock tower are stunning.
